Any machine can print big. The judgement is how much resolution a job needs at the distance people will stand, where the seams fall on something wider than the roll, and which material survives where it is going.
Large format is the umbrella: anything printed wider than an office printer can manage. In practice that is vinyl, flex, rigid board, fabric and specialist media — and the material pages cover each one.
What this page is about is the two things that decide whether a large print looks good: resolution against viewing distance, and how an oversized job is assembled.
Resolution is counter-intuitive. A hoarding read from forty metres needs far less than a standee read from a foot. People routinely supply a huge file for a hoarding, which only slows the job, and a small file for a close-up panel, which is visibly soft. Get it the right way round and the same budget looks better.

Four things decide a large print, and only one of them is the machine.
Roughly: something read from under a metre wants a genuinely high-resolution file; from five metres much less; from forty metres, very little. A 300 dpi file for a hoarding is enormous, slow and makes no visible difference. A web-sized logo on a backdrop people stand beside is soft and obvious. Anything wider than the roll comes in panels. On background it is invisible; through a face, a logo or a line of text it is the first thing anyone sees. Panel splits are a design decision, and we mark them on a layout for approval before printing.
The same file printed on three different days will not match — ink, humidity and head state all drift slightly. One run, one batch, and the panels match. This is scheduling rather than skill, and it is why a large job needs a little lead time.
A specific red matters to a brand and is the hardest thing to hit blind. A small proof on the actual material, approved before the run, costs almost nothing against reprinting forty square metres.

By material: vinyl and stickers, flex for frontlit and backlit panels, rigid board such as sunboard and PVC, fabric for tension frames, and specialist media like one-way perforated or anti-skid floor film. Each has its own page with sizes and rates.
It depends entirely on viewing distance. Under a metre needs a genuinely high-resolution file; a hoarding read from forty metres needs very little. Supplying 300 dpi for a hoarding just makes an enormous slow file, and supplying a web image for a close-up backdrop looks soft.
