A haldi is messy on purpose, which is exactly why the setup has to be planned. We build the backdrop, the seat, the shade and the photo corner, protect the floor underneath, and clear it all before lunch.

Haldi décor has one job the other functions do not: it has to survive being used. Turmeric goes on hands, clothes, the floor, the drapes and anything within arm's reach of a laughing cousin. So the setup gets designed from the floor up, not from the backdrop down.
That means layered floor cover with sealed edges, a seat the couple can actually be reached on, fabric placed where it will be photographed rather than grabbed, a wash-up point close by, and a teardown crew who arrive before the stains have time to set. It also means an early start, because a haldi is a morning function and marigold strung the night before has to be hanging before the family comes down.
We have been running events since 2013 and we plan, set up and run haldi setups across the city, from terraces in Kothrud to society lawns in Wakad and banquet rooms towards Hadapsar. One team builds it, runs it and clears it.
Every photo here is from an event our team planned and ran.
Every haldi we build has these, whatever the theme on top of them.
Marigold strings, drapes or a floral wall behind two low seats on a small platform, placed so elders can reach the couple.
Sheeting taped at every seam, matting over it, bunded edges, a second layer in the wet zone, cleared the same morning.
A shamiana, canopy or umbrellas with fans, and side flaps ready if the sky looks doubtful during the rains.
Lit properly and kept clear of the wet zone, so photographs happen without adding to the mess.
Real chairs with backs, in the shade, close enough to watch the couple and far enough to stay clean.
Frames up the previous evening, flowers dressed at first light, and everything struck as soon as the function ends.
We ask where it is happening and what that place allows: drilling, turmeric indoors, access hours, lift size and the cleaning terms.
You getA clear picture of what is possible there
A setup drawn for that space with the backdrop, seat, shade, elder seating and photo corner marked, priced line by line.
You getA design and an itemised quote
Flower volume confirmed against the season, frames sized, and freestanding bases planned wherever nothing may be fixed.
You getA locked material list
Structures and floor protection go in the previous evening so the early morning is quiet and only the dressing is left.
You getA build that will not wake the building
Flowers dressed at first light, the wash-up point stocked, a crew member through the function, and teardown as soon as it ends.
You getA clean venue and no stain dispute
Start with the floor and the shade. A haldi looks like a décor question and behaves like a logistics one, because turmeric stains whatever it touches and the function lands in the part of the day that is either cold or blindingly bright.
Turmeric marks tile, marble, wooden decking and society paving, and some of it never fully lifts. Every venue knows this, which is why the rules you are handed for a haldi are stricter than for any other function.
The method is simple. A full plastic sheet across the working area, taped at every seam, then carpet or coir matting over it so nobody slips, with the edges bunded so paste and water cannot run past the cover. The wet zone, where the couple sit, gets a second layer. A wash-up point with buckets, water, soap and towels goes just off the setup rather than across the property, because guests with yellow hands will otherwise touch every wall in between. And book the teardown to begin the moment the function ends. Stains lifted straight away are a completely different job from stains that sat for four hours.
Get the venue's cleaning terms in writing before you book. Some halls charge for stain damage, some restrict haldi to outdoor areas only, and a few will not allow it indoors at all.
The same design takes very different amounts of work in different places, and some places will not take the design at all.
| Where it happens | What it gives you | What has to come in | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home terrace | Privacy, an early start and family already on site | Freestanding frames, shade, floor cover, a water point, lighting | Lift size, parapet safety, weight limits and neighbours at dawn |
| Society hall or open space | Room, parking and a short walk home | Everything, and usually with no drilling or permanent fixing | Committee permission, fixed timings and a cleaning deposit |
| Bungalow or farm lawn | Grass, natural shade and space for a shamiana | Anchoring, matting, power and a cover plan | Soft ground after rain, and the carry from the gate |
| Banquet room | Cooling, a finished floor, chairs and staff | Décor and heavy floor protection, little else | Turmeric rules, which many halls restrict, and charges for stains |
| Hotel or resort lawn | A ready-made setting with staff on hand | Décor, cover, and a wash-up point they will agree to | Setup hours, and their rules about what may touch the grass |
Two questions cover most of this. Can anything be fixed to a wall or a ceiling, and what is the largest item that fits through the lift or the gate? A no on the first means freestanding frames with weighted bases, which are heavier, slower and need more floor. A narrow lift means the backdrop arrives in sections and gets assembled upstairs.
Strip it back and six things decide whether it works.
After that come the flourishes: brass urlis with floating flowers, hanging matkas, mango-leaf torans, rangoli at the entrance, mirrors and pinwheels for colour, and an accent shade that stops a wall of yellow reading flat. Our haldi décor ideas post has the picture-led version.
Haldi is a morning function, so the build runs backwards from the hour the family wants to start. Marigold comes from the flower market early and is strung the same day, which means garlands and strings are made the previous evening or brought in at dawn. Structures go up first, drapes second, flowers last, because flowers laid out too early in the sun wilt before anyone sees them.
On a terrace or in a society space the binding constraint is noise, not time. Hammering at five in the morning will end your relationship with the building, so frame work happens the previous evening and only soft dressing happens at first light. In a banquet the constraint is the session, and you may get access only after the previous function has cleared.
Put the crew's arrival, the flower delivery, the floor cover and the wash-up point on the same sheet as the family's timings. A haldi that starts an hour late eats into the mehendi, and the two are usually on the same day. Our wedding planners in Pune page sets out how the functions fit against each other.
No two haldi quotes match, because the work is driven by the space rather than by a menu. These move it most, roughly in order.
Send us the venue, the date and roughly how many people are coming, and we will put an itemised sheet in front of you. If the haldi and mehendi fall on the same day, ask for them together, because the crew is already on site and the saving is real. Our wedding decorators page covers the rest of the functions.

A backdrop, a raised seat for the couple, shade or cover, seating for elders, one lit photo corner and a haldi table, with floor protection under all of it. Add-ons after that are urlis, hanging pots, umbrellas, torans, rangoli and lighting. The floor cover and the teardown are part of the job, not extras.
Yes, and most terraces work well once three things are checked. Whether anything can be fixed to the parapet or the walls, which usually decides freestanding frames. What fits in the lift, since backdrops then arrive in sections. And how early the building will tolerate noise, which is why frames go up the previous evening.
With layers, not a single sheet. Plastic sheeting taped at every seam goes down first, then matting or carpet so nobody slips, with the edges bunded so paste and water cannot escape. The wet zone gets a second layer. A wash-up point sits just off the setup, and teardown starts as soon as the function ends.
Frames, floor cover and drapes go in the evening before, and flowers are dressed at first light. Marigold is bought and strung the same day, so it cannot be put up too early without wilting. That split also keeps the noisy work out of the early morning, which matters on a terrace or in a society.
Fresh flower volume first, because marigold is bought by weight and moves with the season. Then the size of the structure, whether frames must stand free because drilling is banned, how much cover you need, the floor area being protected, and the access. Overnight builds and same-day turnarounds add crew hours. Send the venue for an itemised quote.
Some do, some restrict it to an outdoor area and a few refuse entirely, so ask before you book the hall. Where it is allowed, expect stricter floor protection terms and a cleaning charge if anything marks. Get the terms in writing with the booking, along with the setup hours you are given.
Yellow does the heavy lifting, but a wall of it photographs flat. Add white for contrast, orange marigold for depth, and one accent: green foliage, fuchsia, cobalt or mirror work. Rustic setups use cane, jute and clay against the yellow. Tropical setups use banana leaf and brass, which holds up well in hard morning light.
Less than families assume for the backdrop and more than they assume for everything around it. The seat and backdrop take a modest footprint; the wet zone, elder seating, the haldi table, the photo corner and a walkway need several times that. Measure the usable area, not the total, and leave a clear path for guests.
