A good party is decided by three things: the guest list, the venue and the age of the children. Decide those first, and the theme, games and décor fall into place.
Write down children and adults separately. Twenty children with twenty parents is a very different party from twenty children with drop-off. A living room works for a small group of toddlers. A society clubhouse or terrace suits a mid-sized group. For bigger family gatherings, a banquet hall or lawn gives you a stage, dining space and parking. If you live in a society in Wakad or Kharadi, book the clubhouse early because weekend slots go fast, and check the society's rules on music timing and outside caterers.
Toddlers respond to colours and characters they recognise. Children between five and eight love themes they can play, like jungle safari, space, dinosaurs, superheroes or a circus. Older children prefer activities over décor: treasure hunts, mini sports, dance-offs or craft stations. For adults, a dress code theme such as retro or Bollywood does most of the work.
Children's attention runs out quickly. A simple structure works well: welcome and free play, anchor-led games, cake cutting, food, one more short activity, then return gifts. Keep the cake cutting in the first half, before younger children get cranky. For a first birthday, plan around the baby's nap and feeding time, not the other way round.
For a home or clubhouse party, three to four weeks is usually enough. For a first birthday or milestone party at a banquet hall, start six to eight weeks ahead, and earlier if the date falls in the wedding season or around Diwali.
